What Do Grain Carts Do?
Grain carts, also known as chaser bins or auger carts, are the modern way to transfer harvested grain, or other crops, from the combine into the wagon. Using an auger, the crop is moved into the cart without needing to rely on gravity to do the work or, more importantly, without needing to stop what you’re doing to do it. They’re easy enough to pull along beside you, even in muddy conditions, so everything can happen all at once.
Size
As with most farm equipment, you’ll need to consider size when you’re looking at your options. Of course, you’ll want something that’s going to help you be productive and make a big project easier, but you also need to consider the size of the equipment pulling the grain cart. You never want to get a model that’s going to overwhelm your truck or tractor, so taking certain specs, like PTO, into consideration is a must.
Tracks or Tires?
Some grain carts come with the option of tracks, row crop tires, or flotation tires. The choice you make will affect how much traction you get or how little the ground is disturbed. For example, row crop tires won’t impact crop rows, but flotation tires are perfect for muddy fields, and tracks are often the best choice if you want to avoid soil compaction. Decide what’s best for your fields so you can make the right choice for your farm.
Brand Name
This will sometimes boil down to personal preference, but it’s worth looking into the reputation of a brand name to see if they have a history of productive grain carts. For example, Kinze has long dominated the market, but they’re not the only name that can provide excellent performance out in the field. The best way to find the best name is to do a little research and to ask your neighbors which brands they would recommend
