Catching Up with Birkey's Precision Farming Intern
In 2017, it was estimated more than 50% of today’s farmers use at least one precision farming practice. This percentage is growing exponentially each year, so we were excited to catch up with new Precision Farming Intern Johnnie Dean to hear about his background and what he’s most excited about on the horizon.
“I was initially interested in precision farming because I grew up on a farm and have always had a close relationship with agriculture and what it offers,” Dean said. “I also enjoyed the idea of including technology to get the best possible outcome. With precision farming, I get to see a larger picture of agriculture and see the different practices between growers.” Dean is currently pursuing his degree in precision technology at Parkland College in Champaign.
“During my internship with Birkey’s, I’ve worked on several different aspects of what precision farming support can do. I’ve created support documents and flyers, added to a Google Earth file for RTK stations and with a customer list, installed precision technology, and worked to troubleshoot precision systems.”
Dean is most excited about the never-ending possibilities this position affords. “It can be anywhere from advancements in technology to steady increase in user base… and I see the generation 3 Precision Planting 20|20 display being a large development in precision agriculture. It can provide large amounts of information quickly and clearly. When it is paired with an OEM display, it can become even more beneficial.”
